Medical Entomology Course

Event from 29/09/2025 to 03/10/2025

Medical Entomology Course is intended to improve the control of vector-borne diseases in a One Health context.

This course is organized within the Pasteur Network every two years, alternating with the “Insect Vectors and Pathogen Transmission” course at the Institut Pasteur in Paris.

After Laos and New Caledonia, it will be held in Tunisia in 2025. The Institut Pasteur of Tunis will host this one-week course and will offer academic lectures on vector insects (mosquitoes, ticks, sandflies, and others), their interactions with medically significant pathogens, and the most current control strategies (insecticides, Wolbachia, etc.).

Scientific Context and Rationale

North African countries are experiencing a growing prevalence of vector-borne diseases. These diseases pose a major public health challenge in these countries. Environmental, climatic, and socio-economic factors, such as climate change and uncontrolled urbanization, promote vector proliferation. In this context, it is essential to strengthen local capacities in medical entomology to monitor, prevent, and control vector-borne diseases, while adapting to the specificities of the targeted countries. Specialized, tailored training will enable professionals to acquire the necessary skills to enhance their knowledge of vectors, understand the pathogens they transmit, and implement appropriate control strategies.

Training Outcomes

This course is aimed at researchers, students, and vector control officials from the region who wish to deepen their knowledge of vector-borne diseases (VBD). They will benefit from academic training provided by high-level researchers. This one-week theoretical course is combined with a practical course organized by the IP in Côte d’Ivoire (from November 24 to 29, 2025) for more operational training aimed at improving the fight against VBD in the One Health context. More specifically, this course at IP in Côte d’Ivoire is intended for technicians and engineers from national institutions that have sent corresponding vector control officials to the training at IP in Tunis.

This course is co-organized by the Institut Pasteur in Paris, IRD, and the Institut Pasteur in Tunis with support from the Labex IBEID, the IRD, and the Fondation de France.
